Dental Implants

Nobel at National Dental MelvilleWhen you lose your teeth, replacing them is important. For many years, your options for tooth replacement were limited. Depending upon the number of teeth you lost, the answer was either a fixed bridge, a partial denture, or full dentures. Today, you have options. At National Dental Melville, we offer dental implants for your tooth replacement needs.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the latest option for replacing missing teeth. They consist of small, titanium rods, which are surgically placed into your jawbone. Once there, they rely on a process known as osseointegration (or fusion) with the bone. This fusion turns your implants into stable supports for your replacement teeth.

The Types of Dental Implants

Implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. To suit your specific needs, there are several types of implants available:
•  Single tooth implants. A single implant is placed, which supports a single crown.
•  Multiple tooth implants. Also known as an implant supported bridge, these implants take the place of traditional bridges and partial dentures. Your replacement teeth are supported by one or more implants.
•  Implant supported dentures. This type of implant is used when you are missing an entire arch of teeth (or all of the teeth in your mouth). Your replacement teeth are supported by six to eight implants.
•  Four Ever Smile™. When you lack sufficient bone mass for regular implant supported dentures, the All-on-4 treatment concept may be an option. Your replacement teeth are supported by four implants placed strategically for maximum bone contact.

How Are Your Implants Placed?

Dental implants require a surgical procedure. We begin with a local anesthetic. If necessary, sedation can also be used to help you relax. We then make incisions in your gums at the necessary locations. Holes are drilled into your jawbone, and the implants are placed. Your gums are then stitched closed around the implants, and temporary teeth are placed.

Healing can take several weeks to several months, depending on your situation. As you heal, we will periodically check on the fusion of your jaw to the implants. When you have fully healed, the process for your permanent teeth begins. The abutments are placed on the implants and impressions taken. The impressions are used to design and fabricate your teeth. When they are ready, they are screwed into place.
