Dentistry for Kids

Dentistry for Kids at National Dental MelvilleJust like you, your child should be brushing and flossing every day. Moreover, just like you, regular dental visits are essential for the prevention, and early detection, of oral health issues. However, your child’s mouth is different from yours. It is constantly growing and changing and will continue to do so until their late teens. Because it is different, your child’s mouth requires more specialized care. At National Dental Melville, we can help your child maintain optimal oral health with dentistry for kids.

Cleanings and Exams

Regular dental cleanings and exams are just as important for your children as they are for you. They should also have at least two visits per year. Cleaning your child’s teeth involves scraping the surface to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria build up. We will then polish your child’s teeth using a special abrasive dental polish.

Your child will undergo an exam during the same visit. We will inspect their teeth for signs of damage, as well as signs of cavities. Their gums will be checked for signs of swelling and redness. We will also inspect their other oral tissues for any potential problems. Their jaw will be assessed for alignment issues. After we are done inspecting your child’s mouth, we will then have a discussion with them (and with you, depending on their age) about their oral care habits at home. We can also provide them with tips for better brushing and answer any questions they (or you) might have.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is an essential element in the health of tooth enamel. Fluoride treatments can help to strengthen the enamel on teeth and professional fluoride treatments can help. These treatments are simple and painless. We simply apply a gel to your child’s teeth that will absorb into the enamel. Fluoride helps to protect your child’s teeth against acid attacks, and will also provide a protective barrier for erupting permanent teeth.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are another protective measure used to prevent cavities. These are designed for use on the chewing surfaces of the molars. The molars have deep crevices and grooves, which can easily catch and hold food particles, bacteria, and other debris. These areas are not often easily cleaned, particularly by children. Sealants are a simple, pain-free procedure that involves the painting on of a special material, which is hardened with a special light. The sealants cover over the deep crevices in your child’s teeth, making them easier to keep clean.

Digital X-Rays

X-rays are an integral part of your child’s oral health care record. They allow us to monitor the development of your child’s teeth and jaw. They also allow us to more easily diagnose cavities or spot them in their early stages. At National Dental, we use digital X-ray technology, which uses electronics, rather than radiation, to capture images.

Early Orthodontics

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children undergo an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. This evaluation will help to determine your child’s need for orthodontic treatment in the future. Some issues can be detected as early as two years old. Depending upon the issue, certain steps may be able to be taken early, which can then help to lessen the severity of treatment in the teen years. In some cases, the need for orthodontic treatments later may be eliminated.
