IV SEDATION

Dental visits, whether you are getting a routine cleaning and exam, or need an issue diagnosed, are important for maintaining optimal oral health. They help to prevent serious oral health issues or address issues before they become worse. However, many people have a fear of the dentist, or experience anxiety when they think of making an appointment. Ignoring routine visits, or any oral pain you may be experiencing can have serious consequences on the condition of your mouth. At National Dental Melville, we can help you to get the treatment you need with sedation dentistry.

Why Sedation Dentistry?

Experiencing fear and anxiety over visiting the dentist is a common issue. Some patients experience extreme fear that will keep them from making an appointment, even if they know they have a serious problem. Ignoring dental treatment, whether it’s a routine cleaning and exam or an exam to diagnose a specific issue, can be detrimental to your oral health. Most dental problems only grow worse over time, putting your oral health at risk, and potentially jeopardizing your overall health. When oral health issues progress, the treatments required grow more invasive.

Sedation is a safe, effective way to help you deal with your fear and anxiety. It allows you to relax so that you can get the treatments you need. Sedation may also be helpful in situations such as:

  • You have a bad gag reflex.
  • You find it difficult to sit still for any length of time.
  • Your pain threshold is low, or your teeth are very sensitive.
  • You need to have a significant amount of dental work done, or your treatment will take several hours.

IV SEDATION

IV sedation is another form of moderate conscious sedation. However, instead of taking a medication by mouth, the medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a needle. It produces similar effects to oral sedation, except that it works much faster (taking effect within seconds of being administered).

There is some preparation that needs to be done before your appointment. You must fast for at least 6 to 8 hours before your appointment. This includes fasting from both food and water. When you arrive for your appointment, a needle will be inserted either into the back of your hand or your forearm. The IV fluids will be connected. When we are ready to begin, the medication is administered, and you will feel relaxed in a short period. Your entire procedure is MD supervised, and your sedation can be adjusted as needed. When your treatment is over, you will need someone to drive you home. Much like oral sedation, the effects will last for a few hours following your appointment.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

There are several benefits to sedation dentistry including:

  • You can remain completely relaxed throughout your entire procedure.
  • By getting the treatments you need, your oral health will greatly improve.
