ALL-ON-4® TREATMENT CONCEPT
For several decades, the solution for missing teeth was dentures. Today, there is another option – dental implants. While implants are more invasive, requiring a surgical procedure, they offer numerous benefits over traditional dentures. At National Dental Melville, we offer several types of dental implants to suit a variety of needs, including the All-on-4® treatment concept.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a fabulous option available for replacing missing teeth. They are the newest option and require a surgical procedure for placement. They consist of small, titanium rods, which are inserted into the jawbone. As you heal, your bone fuses to the implants, creating a strong, stable support for your new teeth.
What is All-on-4®?
Usually, implants require sufficient bone mass in your jaw for successful fusion, also known as osseointegration. A full arch of missing teeth is typically replaced by six to eight dental implant per arch when the All-on-4® is not used. Bone loss in the jaw occurs soon after you lose your teeth. This causes the jaw to become weak and lose mass. The longer you wait to replace teeth, the less likely implants will be a feasible option. Bone grafts have made implants possible after bone loss, but they require another surgical procedure that can take some time to heal before implants can be placed.
The All-on-4® treatment concept provides an alternative. This treatment allows you to get dental implants while avoiding the need for a bone graft. Instead of the six to eight implants usually needed to successfully hold an implant supported denture, All-on-4® implants rely on only four implants per arch. This support is possible due to strategic placement of the implants within your jaw.
How are They Placed?
The surgical procedure for All-on-4® implants is similar to that of regular dental implant surgery. The main difference is in the placement of the implants. After a local anesthetic and any sort of sedation you prefer, incisions are made in your gum tissue. Holes are created in the jaw bone, and the implants are placed. Two implants are placed at the front of the jaw, where more bone tends to exist normally. The other two implants are then placed at the back of the jaw and are inserted at a 45-degree angle. This angle provides maximum contact with the bone.
After the implants are placed, your gums are stitched closed around them, leaving a small amount exposed above the tissue. Temporary replacement teeth are provided for use while you heal. Healing can typically take several weeks to a few months. During this time, periodic visits will ensure that your jaw is healing properly. When you have fully healed, impressions are taken and your permanent teeth created. Once they are ready, they are screwed into place, providing you with a beautiful, permanent smile.
